Canadian ceramist Heidi McKenzie works with different coloured clays to express the diversity of her own mixed Indo-Caribbean/Irish-American ethnicity. Using coloured porcelain like finger paints, she throws each vessel on the wheel with an intuitive sense of landscape: sunset, sky, water, morning light…
The pieces held in Object Shop were made during Heidi’s artist residency at The Armory at Sydney Olympic Park in Spring 2017. This is the first time she experimented with terra cotta and stoneware clays with the aforementioned technique. The colour palette was informed by her awe-inspiring experience of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, King’s Canyon and Alice Springs.
