Al's work investigates the relationship between abstract and non-objective painting, textiles and geometry.

"One of the main focuses of my work is the geometry of patterns and the never-ending options for variation that simple pattern systems allow. This for me represents hope – that there will always be innovation, creativity, aberrations and new ways of looking at old ideas."

In recent works, Al has made use of a ‘folded’ or corrugated surface, which is likened to textile pleats. The pleated surface causes changes in how the patterned surface can be seen and activates the viewer’s experience of the painted surface through an optical distortion. As the viewer moves around the work, areas of the pattern are either revealed or hidden, allowing the experience of the pattern, colours and forms to change according to the viewer’s position.
