Rain forms a critical component of the natural cycle. It brings flowing water, so vital to all living things. It shapes our ancient landscapes; cutting valleys and cliff faces in the rock. Rain brings fresh water to the earth's surface replenishing and creating lush forests and fast-flowing rivers.

New Beginnings captures a fleeting moment of Australia’s gentle summer rain. This work looks specifically at the lines, shapes, colours and textures found during such cleansing rain. The subtle shift in aqua tones evokes memories of a mid-afternoon sun shower. The tension variations in the form are reminiscent of the ebb and flow of water.

The weaving is woven flat and, when released from the loom, the metal’s malleability creates a form that evokes a sense of energy reminding us of the ongoing cycle of nature, renewal and encouraging us to take a moment for the enjoyment of life itself.

Christine Appleby is an emerging artist captivated by the inventive process and infinite possibilities of weaving. Christine graduated with Honours in Textiles from the Australian National University, School of Art and Design in 2017. She has held three solo exhibitions and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and the Viewers Choice award.
