Looking back to Canberra’s time in lockdown in 2021 Lee remembers looking out at her garden from her studio window, thinking about family and wondering when she might see them next. Walking through the nearby woodland nature reserve helped lift her spirits. The way the light would glimmer through the eucalyptus leaves, Lee noticed the shapes of the trees and was fascinated by pops of colour found along the trails. The narrowing of her field of vision, moment to moment, became a grounding and restorative experience. With it came the hope for travels further afield, one day soon.

'Wistful, I Wait', ‘Blooming’, and ‘In Harmony’ was designed by mixed media collage before each was translated to woven tapestry. Together, they form the story ‘Woodland Dreams’ – a trilogy of memory, connection, and place.

Lee Leibrandt is an early career textile artist who weaves small format tapestries based in Canberra. Lee completed an intensive tapestry weaving short-course through the ANU School of Art and Design in 2016. Lee has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and has been awarded several awards and prizes. In 2021, Lee was awarded High Commendations in both the Irene Davies Emerging Artist Award for Small Tapestries and Gosford Art Prize.
