Edward of A Silversmith's Dream (formerly Sylvie & Grace) recently participated in ADC's Special Maker Marketplace. As a talented young maker early in their making career, Edward answered three quick-fire questions about where he sees this passion leading him.

Edward, you are a young person at only 13 who already has a strong creative practice. When and how did you begin your creative practice?

I have always been very creative, but my jewellery passion started 5 years ago, when my teacher brought a jewellery making kit to after school care. I really liked it, so at home I started making beaded jewellery from recycled materials like single earrings, beads, wire, and so much more. Then I got the opportunity to make a silver ring and I really liked it.Today I mostly make silver jewellery however I also enjoy making wooden items like cheese and chopping boards.

What do you like most about silversmithing and making jewellery?

I love making jewellery, as it is quite a diverse craft and I can make things relatively quickly compared to other mediums. I especially like silver jewellery, as silver is so easy to work with. It is soft, easy to solder and texture and lets me unleash my creativity in a great medium. If anyone wants to get into jewellery making, silver would be an incredible starting point.

I have also been working with my awesome tutors (@thebench) who have helped me with a lot of skills and techniques. I really like the community of makers. They make me feel very welcome.

Was the ADC market the first time that you have taken your work to an audience?  What was the experience like for you?

The ADC market was the first time I have taken my silver work to an audience. I have had another market experience, several years ago, for my recycled jewellery but that was a little different. I had a lot of help from my Mum and Dad as I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. The ADC market was awesome, I did pretty much everything myself in preparation in addition to making the jewellery. This included planning the display and pricing all items. I got some great feedback from other makers and people visiting the market. I still got asked “Are you here helping your mum?” even though this time she was hiding in the corner so people didn't think it was her stall. Everyone was so kind and supportive when they realised I was the maker. I did well and I’d love to come again.

Where do you see your creative practice leading you in the future?

In the future I see myself continuing silversmithing. The ADC market was a lot of work so I might go at a slower level than I have been, until I have finished my education after which I might do it as a job or continue it as a hobby. I do really like silversmithing, and I hope to continue it for as long as possible.

Thanks Edward!
