Sarah Eddowes is a PhD candidate at the University of NSW. With a background in painting and animation, Sarah integrates her diverse skills into a cross-disciplinary experimental practice encompassing animation, virtual reality, painting, ceramics and sculpture. Her ongoing research is a captivating exploration into the layering and translation of digital and physical artmaking techniques, resulting in a unique tactile aesthetic.

Sarah's hybrid art practice delves into the transformative qualities of materials through systematic process. She employs both manual manipulation and digital tools to capture and express dynamic processes, highlighting the slippages that occur within these creative interactions. The work offers a captivating glimpse into the meeting of various art forms, where the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds blur.

[ceramic story] I am deeply fascinated by the line as a form that guides matter into direction and structure. When materials like ceramics, silicone, wax, or fibre are channelled into a line, their undulation and variation reflect the behaviour of the material and the process of its creation.

[digital connection] Developed by the artist, the virtual reality and sensory component of this work focuses on the animated and dynamic interaction between physical materials during the making process, often only seen within the artist’s studio.
