Emma Field
Looking South Series
“This collection was inspired by and dedicated to my dad, Russell Field, who passed away from cancer at the end of 2019. Dad worked in the field of environmental science for most of my life but knew a lot about everything. I have so many memories of him telling us about things like tectonic plates and rock formations - we would ask one question for an assignment and then get an hour lecture. Although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, these lectures helped me appreciate the incredible forces that have formed the earth around us.
These pieces were inspired by the force of compressional stress. It squeezes rocks and layers of the earth together to create seemingly impossible layers in cliffs or pushes up formations through the earth’s surface. I experimented with my own layering and squeezing with pieces of wax to create my own versions of these. They express my own stress and grief which has pushed and pulled my soul, changing me, and integrating into who I am.”
