ADC has worked with SIGNWAVE Newtown over many years to produce high quality exhibition signage. We talk to Dean Rowland from Signwave about some of his favourite projects, challenges and working with cultural organisations.

Where are you based and what kinds of signage do you do?
Signwave Newtown is based in the light industrial area of Marrickville. Right amongst the coffee bean roasters and craft beer brewers. We started off on the north end of King St back in 1999. Unfortunately as we grew there wasn’t anywhere in Newtown to house our size operation.

We specialise mainly in exhibition graphics, event signage, vehicle graphics, corporate branding and retail signage fit-outs. We produce all of our work in-house so have a large range of equipment ranging from laser cutting and CNC services to large format printing. We now also fabricate lightboxes and illuminated signage with LED internal lighting.

What sorts of companies or organisations do you work with?
We mainly work with Government departments, Arts and Cultural organisations a. We have also worked closely with Sydney Festival, Sydney Film Festival and Sydney Writers festival for many years producing all of the venue signage.

What are the more interesting innovations in signage in recent years, including new technologies?
There is always improvement on colour and quality as new equipment is released. We decided to move to printing and producing “green” signage solutions as much as we possibly can. Our inks are not harmful to people and the environment, we have recyclable and bio degradable products and also offer some recycling services for festivals and events.

We are still yet to see anything amazing or cost effective in the 3D area. In the meantime, we have had some great fun using LED lighting modules in our displays ( Luminocity pic attached). We also have a flexible Neon LED that is starting to take off ( “Sold”pic attached). It is transportable and easy and safe to work with unlike conventional glass neon.

Can you tell us your favourite sign for our space at ADC?
My favourite sign was the “Designing Bright Futures” gold exterior decal. It really stood out and had many a comment from those who knew we had produced and installed this sign. It was a very simple sign however had some amazing impact!
