Today I was out walking in the sun with a new team member and I realised that it is a year to the day that we opened our new gallery spaces here on William Street in Darlinghurst. Recent events with the Australia Council funding decision and general busyness nearly made this anniversary slip our minds!
ADC One Year On
Today I was out walking in the sun with a new team member and I realised that it is a year to the day that we opened our new gallery spaces here on William Street in Darlinghurst. Recent events with the Australia Council funding decision and general busyness nearly made this anniversary slip our minds!
How could we forget that night! So many people coming out in support of the ADC in our 50th year, with a queue snaking around the building and a well intended smoking ceremony turning into a visit by a couple of fire trucks from the local brigade! We launched our Australian Design Honours program and set the scene for what was to be a year of activity animating the former car sales rooms of William Street. Now it feels like home and one that we share with so many people who visit, interact and enjoy our collaborations.
I feel very privileged to be invited by the former Director Steve Pozel and the ADC Board to lead the organisation through its next phase. No doubt it will be a challenge but I am so well supported by a fantastic team, a Board that is committed and passionate about craft and design innovation and a community of designers, makers and creative individuals who have long supported our organisation as we support them to bring their work to a local and national audience. The people that come to our shows and participate in our events are the reason we are here.
This past week I have received so many messages of support and I thought I would share this one from a teacher:
Thanks for a very informative and inspiring exhibition Shapeshifters: 3D printing the future. I have brought students to the ADC for a previous workshop on 3D printing which they found fun and stimulating. I attended a forum about the potential and problems of 3D printing and was able to take elements of the debate back to my selective high school classroom where students held their own debate. A general well-done you guys for continuing this trajectory, for being contemporary , innovative and user friendly. I look forward to bringing more students to become informed and inspired.
Please come along and see our Shapeshifters: 3D Printing the Future exhibition and check out the events we have planned alongside the show. Such a joy to be working with a group of brave makers who are taking their craft practice to new levels using 3D printing technology. In July we turn to ceramics in Clay Intersections. I can hardly wait for this show that Cath Fogarty is producing with us. It will be a visual delight that again shows people working with traditional ceramic techniques who take inspiration from architecture and the environment.
